Wyoming Region G

I currently have 7 preference points for deer. I had accumulated them with the intent of using them for a Region G tag. That area obviously took a huge hit with winterkill this past year. I can’t hunt it this upcoming season due to my schedule, but I was considering it for 2019 (when I would have 8 points). Do you think it would be worth that many points given the winterkill? Obviously the hardest hit were the young and old deer, so I’m thinking the mature buck population wouldn’t be as affected at that time. I think if I waited until 2020 the missing year classes would start to be evident. I was also hoping to hear how the buck numbers were this year from anyone who might have hunted it. Too bad you can't hunt it in 2018 because all indications from guys that were in G scouting and hunting it this year said there were plenty of good bucks to be had. Now it's up to the weatherman to have an average to below average winter there this year and it should be even better. You're going to have to hope there are two consecutive winters that are decent if you can't go before 2019. Anyone that wants to hunt it in 2018 needs to see how the winter this year goes and then decide to apply or not apply right before the application period closes the end of May.

My son had a GEN elk tag that we hunted in areas of Region G this year (after the deer hunt). We didn't see quite as many bucks as 2016 when I had a Region G deer tag, but still a lot bucks. I think if this winter and next are average or below, you should do well.

Thanks Topgun and ashersdad. I appreciate the information. I have a week of vacation this year at the end of September, but after building points for 7 or 8 years for this tag I want to give it my best effort. If I wait until 2019 I can take 2 weeks of vacation to hunt it.
