so I picked up one of these leftover gen tags for region A . low expectations, just want to get out and hunt. Why aren't they selling ? I understand access isn't great in region A but there is a chunk of the black hills in unit 2 with public access , and I would think getting a deer in there would be doable . What am I missing ? is there something that turns people away from Region A deer? Maybe the access issue is worse than I thought, I guess ill see in November .

Hunted there on a private ranch. Deer stay in the public and moved to the private to feed. Bow season might be best for you. Never hunted in the rifle season. I would imagine that the deer move down to the private to feed during rifle season. Very little deer in the public forests. Just my speculation

good luck to all
the dog

I have hunted it a few times, not in the last couple years though. Mostly whitetail on the public. Expect lots of other hunters, but we never had to hard of a time filling tags if you are not looking for anything big. Private can hold some decent deer if you want to pay trespass fee.

I know that back in the day I hunted out of the bear lodge campground and was able to take some good whitetails. just hoof it above the private hay fields and ambush them. mulies are a little tougher to find

I've hunted Region A for probably 10 years on a private ranch my Dad lined up in the early 90's. We've always had success and seen good numbers of deer, and usually atlas 1 person in our group shoots a really good buck. Have never hunted public land there but I'd imagine it's a lot more difficult.

Ok thanks . I'm excited . I like challenges . I'd rather take a muley but a buck whitetail would be fine too . Like I said I just want to camp out (in back seat of my pickup ) and hike for a few days and enjoy myself . I do want a deer for the meat so won't be real fussy probably first 3x3 of either species .

Doing antelope last of october then deer November first or close.got to be back in michigan by the 15 th.

I'll be out there too this fall. Any chance you fellas that have been there before with some luck have any pictures of a typical deer you harvest? I know it's mostly whitetail and probably younger but wouldn't mind know what to expect size wise. I'm just excited to get out there and give it a try!

You will have to let us know how it goes. I'm very curious about this area also.

Have no idea what a "typical deer" is for the area, as I haven't hunted it that much. But, I shot this one in 2003/04ish in region A. My wife had a chance at a buck about the same size or maybe a pinch better. We also had several chances to shoot 100-130 class whitetails.

Been too long since I've hunted there and may just try to make it back this Fall.

Just looked at the regs for areas 2 and 4 in Unit A, and just wanted to make sure my understanding is correct. "Antlered deer off private land" means you can shoot only antlered deer (either mule or whitetailed) on public, correct?
