Woodworking Hunt Talkers?

that is a nice sign for sure. to me it seems that prices for that kind of work is all over the board. have you looked around to see what similar work sells foe in your area?
I have no area. My nearest stop sign is an hour away. I know that I made it cheap as hell. I made probably 3 bucks an hour.

I have a question for all you wood wizards. I have made a few signs for a couple people and a couple for myself. I take a decent slab, free hand write it out then free hand router it. Several coats of clear exterior sealer with painted letters. I got a request for this one the other day and it's just about finished. It's made from Black Walnut with another Walnut graft. It's right at the crotch where I slabbed it. My question is what do you think it's worth, or what would you pay for a custom sign like it? I already told them how much before I started so that's not an issue. I'm curious as to what you guys would think it's worth if I get a call to make another one.View attachment 284598View attachment 284599
I'm terrible at pricing and always charge less than what I should I'm sure. I tried to figure a base price for the wood I use and then go from there. So for some like a nice slab of crotch black walnut I might would say $40-50 then a few hours of labor might go to $75.
But like I said probably under priced, shoot I have two decoys I'm carving right now for a guy and only charging $60 a piece. Most guys around here are in the $100's per decoy.

If you're happy making it for the price you sold it for then don't worry about the lack of profit. Half the time I carve stuff and give it away just because I enjoy making stuff and seeing people enjoy having it.

I quoted it at 50. I'd have been happier at 75 when I was done. I'm just thinking about if there's a next time.

I got a barn find today. There was appeared to be a workbench top in an old barn i wanted. It turned out to be an 8'x2' Maple butcher block. Not segmented but all full length Maple top. Under another pile of rat shit is an 8'x30" top that has separated but in near perfect condition. I'll post up some pictures later. It was a good day!

This is not near the quality of items that some of you guys are turning out, but my wife decided our daughter needed her own room, so I was getting kicked out of my “home office”. I priced up having a backyard office shed delivered/ built, and after seeing the pricing I decided I would make it a weekend project. Started with digging footings and took it through final paint - I also decided to do all the framing by hand (admittedly not a lot of framing), so I got to see what it was like before framing nailers.

I dont think so. I went and picked up another quart and it went on pretty nice . The first can had the consistency of warm molasses, the second can was much thinner and spread much easier. First can was probably old stock that had been on the shelf for too long.
Going to let it dry and router in the slots for
T-track

I've had that issue on a couple things I bought at Lowes, old junk on the shelf too long. I also try to avoid the multi-use products too, they're a shortcut and I think the finish is never quite as good. The combo paint/primer everyone sells now is the same. Do stain, then do poly coat or epoxy or whatever you want on top.

I finally got a start on the workbench rehab. I got the cabinet and top separated and cabinet squared up, support members milled flat and starting on the maple top. It's a little twisted and bowed. I made up some rails for my router sled and took the first pass over it. It may have another 1/16 " possibly more to go.IMG_20230828_112029691.jpgIMG_20230828_112053805.jpgIMG_20230828_112121109.jpg
