Wolves in your deer hunting area

I had a great little camp in Northern MN that I walked away from a few years back. I regret it. It is kind of hard to find areas that dont have them now. I wished I could get back in there. Not too far away and yet it was a getaway. Hard to just plain find spots to hunt.

I would go somewhere else for the day or 3. But if that is your "spot" heck no. The wolves will move on and the deer will move back in. The most deer tracks I saw this year were in the area where I saw the most consistent wolf tracks.
These things will cover dozens of square miles, they push stuff around for sure.

Deer will avoid wolves, like run when they see them. But they won't go far.
Wolved definitely eat deer, but they don't seem to thrive on them like they do elk. I rarely hunt deer that aren't in areas with wolves.

Did you end up killing a buck Draht?

Yeah, we won't talk about the 4 bucks I saw all year. It's pretty bad when you feel guilty for shooting the proverbial cockroach of the ungulate world.

Going to disagree just a little on this one..........We hunt some of the same ground. And I have seen a much greater toll on our whitetail from the wolves than the elk. I remember spring bear hunting one evening in West Mont. and walking an old logging road. In one evening, over 20 different deer carcasses along that road with wolf tracks and crap all over the place. They obviously kill elk no question there but the amount of deer now compared to 10-15 years ago, not even close.

Maybe farther west, they like the deer better:):)

I guess it just depends on what they've got for options. It probably varies a lot on the individual pack as well, whatever they prefer. Last year was the first year that I started finding dead whitetail, that were definitely killed by wolves and not lions.

Our deer numbers are way down though. No argument there.

I was so sure we were going to get a deer. We had seen so many fresh deer dropping and deer scraps, also deer and elk. But after hearing the wolves, everthing moved out.

We did not get a deer. We had seen deer and elk in that area when we scouted. Deer and elk were coming into our camp area and we would see fresh dropping and tracks. The first evevnng we saw elk come into a small water hole and eat. But after the first day every thing just left.

Well,

I went and found a new area to hunt. The season is almost over. This was my last weekend out. I sat with great anticipation as this is an area that according to the state, has a great deer population. It was listed as an "Intensive Harvest" unit so my two bonus tags were looking to be filled. After on the stand for a few hours I caught movement coming across the field. It was a wolf. Never did see a deer and ended up heading to a different area for the Sunday evening sit. Between the wolves, coyotes and last winter - it is getting tough to fill the freezer this year. Looking like I will have to settle for a partially filled freezer.
