I just picked up this original 1876 Winchester in 50 Express. These guns are rare and especially in this condition. I already have a Colt Lightning in 50 Express, so I don’t have to go searching for dies and components to shoot this rifle.

It came with Freund sights, both front and rear. Those sights are different than what you expect to see on these old Winchesters, but they do give you more sighting options.

I took it to the range and with those open sights, was able to shoot this 3 shot group at 100 yards.

Now I have to wait for gophers to come out to get some practice deer hunting next fall.295D7F3C-0D02-4BEF-9B0C-353446DF0B0A.jpegA69E19B8-CBB8-41C6-A862-242D6A701539.jpeg8E09AC04-A33B-4D20-9B57-40795E8C8445.jpeg7E36C4B5-3F8E-40EE-A126-4643D5C771D8.jpeg081FF7EA-C7EB-470D-ADA6-69F36F572314.jpegCD3DD976-0E4B-4CF9-AEE6-8557FD62AA4C.jpeg759152D8-8AD8-44EC-ACCB-1F2448B60797.jpeg41D2EBC6-DF7C-4B62-95E9-9B9EC4F456B9.jpeg5E2294B4-5BF1-495A-B310-934E3794F653.jpegBE543C6C-D229-418E-82EE-3090BECB72C6.jpeg

That’s a beautiful rifle, the best part is you’re shooting it! It’s a shame for these to go in a safe and never see the light of day

I am using a 318 grain gas check bullet, sized .512, and AA5744 powder…

Woodleigh makes a 500 grain bullet that would be fun out of that specimen. Nice find, as always Shrap!

I doubt it would work, these express rifles weren't fast twisted to stabilize those big bullets. This recoils enough, I wouldn't want to shoot that heavy a bullet, detached retinas and all...
