My (now) wife decided she’d like to go chase a pronghorn, and drew a tag in a unit close to home! So with the opener looming, I was able to sneak out yesterday and do a bit of scouting. I managed to find an area where several good herds were spending time and come up with a rough gameplan.
So- excited for the hunt, I woke up bright and early this morning- and promptly went back to sleep. No alarms were set, and the day started off perfectly after a full night’s sleep. Breakfast, play with the dogs, get dressed and head out.
This isn’t my hunt story to tell, but I’ll say there was a decent amount of pressure, an easement to some areas I didn’t know about, and a bit of walking without much cover or terrain.
While stalking a decent herd, we got slightly surprised by a herd coming from behind us. Caught completely in the open, we just hunkered down and got set up. She showed uncharacteristic patience (or maybe that’s just compared to what she shows towards me), and the antelope covered the gap quickly, crossing her 200 yard threshold. A bit more patience, the buck stopped, and she made a good shot for her first pronghorn.
Two years ago, she was my girlfriend who was curious about hunting and wanted to go on a deer hunt. Now, she’s my wife and is putting in for (and filling) her own tags. It’s been a blast so far, and I’m looking forward to everything to come.
