When did you know a hunting partner wasn’t going to last? I’ll go first…

I had a friend who flew out for western hunts with me. He’s retired military with lots of available time. I was his free outfitter. He needs his hand held. No hunting by himself. First few years were ok except he couldn’t shoot and lost two good animals to bad shots at easy ranges.

I finally was worn out after four years. I like the guy but I needed a break from the political rants, I don’t talk politics, and a few other items. I’m crazy work busy this year. I put any hunting trips together on time out this year.

I might let him come back next year.

I used to be very confrontational and thought violence was the last means of communication.
I’m much more calm and rational now .
I subscribed to the philosophy- Never make a situation worse than it already is.
I’d rather just lose a friend than lose a friend plus get arrested .

I don't mean in a violent way. I'm just saying, like, if you don't get what you paid for or somebody doesn't uphold their end of the deal.i used to kinda avoid that, not anymore. pretty much just takeout head on now. Making an awkward situation doesn't bother me like it used to.

Had a hunting buddy that we had a lease type of deal on a ranch with. I ended up doing all the road work and maintenance that we agreed to during the 5 year lease. While they hogged all the extra pronghorn tags for him and his family. Needless to say hes not in the lease anymore. Busy all year til its hunting season than he has all the time in the world to hunt. Now he wonders why some ranchers won't keep letting him hunt

With over 60 years of taking people hunting, this one tops the list when he was asked to pay his share of the weeks food bill, he responded..........."when you're invited on a hunt it does not cost you anything".

He'd have been some awful hungry if he'd have been with me. I'd have let him watch me eat though. I'm not a complete touch hole.

Dude came up to me at the check station at a state run wildlife area and commented about how I always came back with limits of pheasants. I was like yea sure want me to take you to my spot? He’s like yea!, so off we go, my spot was a mile long ditch and a pond on the state wildlife area that was near a private pheasant hunting club. First couple birds flush from the dog and I bang one. Dude looks at it and is like that might be one of the pheasant clubs birds. I’m like well when they are over here they are state birds and over there on that side of the fence they are pheasant club birds. He’s like I don’t feel right about shooting birds that people paid to shoot that escaped and walked off to his truck. Huh..

Best one ever though- dude invites my daughter and I out with him and his kid to hunt turkeys from a big ground blind he had set up on this property with a mega wad of turkeys. There were red flags before but shit there were a lot of turkeys. I agreed to go… about 20 mins in dude asks if I mind if he smokes a joint? Like wtf you want to hot box a ground blind with a couple 12 y/o girls? Our kids? Like wtf?

In 2010 I won an all expenses paid fishing trip for 2 to Alaska. Air fare, rental truck, lodging, everything but food. I asked a buddy if he wanted to go. Of course he jumped on it. He never offered up for meals or any gratuities. He also never offered up a thanks for taking him.

When took a guy out to my camp put him on some game. He showed up empty handed only sporting a cooler with one bag of ice and a twelve pack of beer. Never asked if what he could bring for the weekend or offered to help pay for anything. Road with me to the camp a half a tank of gas away , rode around on my one of my ATVs all weekend burning my gas.

I stopped on the way to camp at a gas station to fill up my atv cans and my truck he never offered any money for gas or to even help me fill them up. He goes into the gas store and buys himself a big two liter bottle of coke and two burritos and never asks me if I needed or wanted anything. Eats them in my truck, drinks out of the coke bottle. Never asked if it was ok that he ate in my vehicle. Just threw his wrappers on my floorboard.

After he kills a few animals he is out of ice so he uses a few bags out of my big cooler I had filled up with ten bags prior to picking him up.

He never lifts a finger to help out at camp or even offer to grab me a beer when he is at the coolers.

I drive him back home he jumps out grabs his gun and cooler. Never asks if he can contribute or reimburse me for anything. Never even thanks me for taking him out he just says” Ok dude see you next time I had an awesome time , cant wait to go again”.

He calls me the week after next and asks me if I’m hunting the coming weekend and wants to know if I will take him and his buddy out if I’m going. It was so outside my normal experience of taking guests out for 20 years I had to just laugh to myself. I told him unfortunately I had other people going with me for the next month of weekends. He called me a few more times after that but I never took the guy again.

Reality was I very likely wouldn't have accepted anything from him anyway. But his sense of entitlement was astonishing. I’m little slow so it took me the whole weekend to figure out this guy wasn't going to cut the mustard as a hunting pard.

Wow, you’re a patient angel. He wouldn’t have made it to wrappers on my floor board, but damn sure would have got him the boot.

My 2 long time friends passed.
I have one I'll tolerate coming Nov., he makes up for my asssholness with gifts of fish and veggies....
