What Sport did you play growing up?

Played soccer from a kid to junior year of highschool, used it as off season training during highschool. Started snowboarding professionally in highschool. Competed on the national level in multiple disciplines and made it onto the US Junior Team for boarder cross. Competed professionally, with multiple sponsors in boarder cross all throughout highschool around the world. Loved the experience, the sport, and the challenge. Lots of injuries and no potential to make enough money to sustain the life.

Now I compete professionally in tree climbing in my late 30s. I have made the finals regionally 6 (CO, WY, MT, NM) and won it twice. I have had the opportunity to compete in the North American Championships 5 times in the last ten years and the international championships once.

Will continue competing till my employee can beat me but with him getting close it’s pushed me to my best. ‘23 1st, ‘24 1st, ‘25 3rd due to a dq via a broken 1” diameter dead branch.

Heading to billings in June for the 2026 Rocky Mountain tree climbing championships.

The lack of archery in the school is something that really disappoints me in my local school system for my son. He’s only 4; maybe I can figure out a way to get that changed before he’s in jr high/high school
Find a teacher who is willing to help sponsor or become an instructor yourself. Pursue grants/donations to get the funding. Your state game agency probably has an archery in the schools coordinator, reach out to them.

This. After I graduated one of my teachers who was big into it got a program started. Unfortunately it only lasted like 2 years and he retired and nobody else took over. But I think you can definitely do it. If im not mistaken genesis archery (mathews) puts out some funding for programs for archery in schools.

I may have been small and skinny in high school, but I was also slow and weak. So, I fished and hunted every day I possibly could.
Same. I wish my kids had the same opportunity, I literally hunted and fished probably 330 plus days a year and all of it was simply walking out the back door to do both. Richest kid in the world and I didnt even know it.

I ran track. I wasn’t any good at it, but we had more fun than we should have on the long bus rides.

Football and wrestling in junior high then exclusively wrestling after 8th grade. Good times for sure.

Hockey, baseball, and ran cross country.

I’d have given anything to have been raised into hunting and fishing around that time like some of you had.

Track was the only sport I participated in in high school. I was on the relay team that holds the Oregon State High School record for the mile relay. A record that has held for 55 years now. Of course, they changed the mile relay to the 4X400 meter relay a few years after we set the record, so my name should be in the record books for eternity. The coaches desperately tried to get me to run cross country but that would have conflict with hunting season, and I did have my priorities.

I didn’t play football because I loved deer hunting more. Some of the schools we competed against were 5 hour bus rides. No thanks!

Little league, baseball and basketball(always wanted to play football). Was decent at baseball but only kept playing because Mom couldn't afford any other sports. Got a part time job at 12 to pay for league hockey. Loved that but wasn't not good at all. Ran cross country 8-10th to condition for Hockey. Started Varsity track in 10th grade-sprints, shot and disc and did that through HS. Mom had something against football, she passed away toward the end of 10th grade. Played Varsity football 11-12th (left tackle and kicker). Last competitive "young" thing I did was box in college. Trained at the local PAL club and won the Campus tournament at Super Middleweight Junior Year. Sports really filled a lot of voids for me after my parents split when I was 8.
