Grabbed my 13 yr old from football practice and headed up to go see if we could get us some bears. We arrived at about 11:00 pm to our camp spot and out of exhaustion we just set up cots in the dirt and slept under the open sky.
As the sun started to come up we packed our bags and headed up the hill. Within 10 minutes of hiking my son spotted a bear feeding across a hillside at 1425 yards. He was a Smokey grey color phase bear and looked to be well fed. We watched him as we made a game plan.
He climbed to a summit that would take us 3 hrs to get to
As we reached the summit we dropped down into the other side in hot pursuit of where we suspected he would be.
As we infiltrated the foliage not 80 yards away we spot a Smokey charcoal bear sitting on a log panting. I point and my son raises his rifle after chambering a round. He asks me if he should shoot. I am hesitant and he is hesitant too.
We decide to wait….
This is not the bear we came here looking for. A jet black and cinnamon cub appear in the foliage near her. We spend the rest of the afternoon watching them from about 40 yards. They bed down and play at the base of a tree trunk and the lone boar in the morning gave us the slip.
