Wednesday Gun Porn

I would imagine. he's worked on my 88 Winchester, Mausers, GEW 88's, etc for me with no complaints. A Savage 99 would be easy enough.

Give him a call: (406) 442-4533. He doesn't have a website or email that I know of. Rat Fink uses him as well.

He's old school though, might talk you out of those new-fangled spitzer bullets and set you on the straight and narrow with a moderate velocity medium bore & round noses. ;)

Gotta love an Old School Gunsmith. I'd think there is a certain allure for them shaping a stock out of a stick of AAA Claro, and watching a beautiful rifle come to life out of a gnarled tree trunk. Gotta respect a smith that still does that.

He is great. It took me a while to figure out how to talk to him. He thinks things through before responding, so it almost seems as though he stopped talking to you. I had heard rumors(and they definitely appeared to be rumors) of him taking a long time on things. I just made sure to keep in constant contact, and even ordered a few of the parts myself. But, he had my rifle done in less than 3 months which I believe is really impressive for a custom rifle when you consider waiting times for parts to be shipped to him. I wouldn't hesitate another rifle from him at all.

my Whelen took about a year, which wasn't unexpected since he had to shape the barrel and clean up an almost 100 year old action. He turned out a rifle that puts 4 into less than an inch. For a 250 grain pill @ 2600 fps, that'll do nicely. :)

Decided to build one rifle by myself before shuttling off the mortal coil, so I chose .280 Rem as the caliber which I could call on to do most anything I needed. Started with a Model 1908 Brazilian DWM Mauser action, medium sporter barrel and a Boyd's Classic stock. Nothing fancy or overly expensive, just a decent working gun that could stand up to rough weather and treatment. The action had some small pits along the wood line as is typical of South American guns, but not so severe as to jeopardize the strength of the action. It had lots of pepper speck surface pits which were removed after taking about .003" off the surface and then polished all the metal parts to a mirror finish. After doing a slow rust blue it came out with a nice satin finish and should withstand abuse better than other methods of bluing. Just to class it up a bit I installed a Husqvarna cocking piece still wearing the factory finish, so if you notice it's being darker, that's the why for.
I still have to do the finish reaming of the chamber & establish headspace, install a rear pillar, bed the action and finish the stock, so maybe before long I'll be able to show off the finished product.
