Waterfowl, let’s see them!

A few birds from some recent hunts, 2026 has started off a bit tough.

The "Pintail" spot last Monday, I've been having some competition getting to the spots I wanted to hunt, and not shooting that great. Been missing a few high shots, should have had another pintail.

Back to the Pintail spot Thursday, did not get many shots and couldn't cash in on a chance at a double on pintails. I also shot a snipe, first one in several years.

Irrelevant, and I got out this weekend. Great couple of days to share a blind. My son went saturday. Decent little shoot Saturday, started out hot today, and then shut down. Three of these were the dogs while we were picking up, she just kept finding them and bringing them back. Irrelevant behind the camera. 1684307052478296552.JPG

The "pintail spot" lived up to it's name yesterday, and I finally got the new limit of 3. The guy I've been competing with didn't show up, so I got the spot I wanted. It wasn't easy as they really weren't decoying, and I missed a lot of long shots. I had hundreds of them fly within 100 yards, but very few within 50. This can be a frustrating place where being on the X is more important than decoys, calling, etc. I was essentially pass shooting when they circled around in a large cove where they have been feeding.

After a long slow spell I started shooting better and finished the pintail limit about 4 PM. A few mallards showed up late and I shot the last one about 30 minutes before sunset, a very long day.The gadwall was a few minutes before that when I thought i would run out of time. After a rough start I killed the last 5 ducks I shot at, hopefully my shooting slump is over.
