Waterfowl, let’s see them!

Went back to the pintail spot hoping to shoot better but didn't. Had a chance to get the new pintail limit (3) but missed several and was lucky to get 2. Also missed my only shot at a mallard. Widgeon were decoying well so I took it out on them, and even got a banded one (on the left). I typically shoot a banded mallard about every other year or so, I think this is the first widgeon. The last duck of the day was the 2nd pintail, and he sailed out into the lake about 500 yards I thought I hit him pretty good but he lit like he was ok. I watched him for about 10 minutes then decided to go paddle after him. Maybe he would just jump out of range but I had to find out. I carry a few rounds of TSS turkey loads for special occasions, and this was one of them, if I got close enough he was gonna get one. When I got within 100 yards he was actually not looking well, so that was a good sign. Soon as I hit 40 yards I finished him off, so the day ended on a positive note.

This spot is a long drive, and a 40 minute paddle each way, tough for an old guy, damn I'm sore today.

Heck of a good day right there. Congrats.

Another great morning on OUR public lands.
First mallard of the year!
In the last several years I've noticed a correlation between killing the first mallard of the year and the week between my birthday and Christmas.
Seems like each year fewer and fewer waterfowl stop in Western Kentucky on their way South. Success is no longer measured in birds killed, or even shots fired, but in time spent with friends and making new ones along the way.

First lake hunt, bluebills, and teal for my new padawan.
Stuck around to try and scrape out some more birds. With 90% or more of the birds on the lake being bluebills, there wasn't much around.
A few buffleheads and goldeneyes skirted at 80yd.

Not a bad day for 72° 20251228_083244.jpg20251228_091948.jpg20251228_065348.jpg
