OK guys, now that I live here I need to start looking into the bear hunt (in addition to all the other animals). Anyone willing to talk to me about the process, where good places are, need help packing stuff, etc.? Is it legal to run dogs to harvest? I read that baiting is allowed for archery only, so I guess I need to hurry and get my bow.

IIRC baiting is legal, but has some restictions. I do know that all bear tags are through a limited entry draw and it's not an easy tag to get. The easier tags are for the fall hunts. Most of the bear units are in the central/southern parts of the state. The northern portion has very few bears due to a lack of any sizable mast crops (as per a F&G biologist). Though I did cut a bear track in Sept up along Hobble Creek.

Looks like I will need to start putting in now and hope for the best. I have a few good contacts in Utah Wildlife that I can hit up for info - prosecuting game crimes has some benefits. From what I was reading, I thought baiting was only legal with archery equip, you can register 2 sites, and can only place bait during the season

That very well could be, about baiting. The bear proclamation is online and would clear up those kinds of questions. Good luck on the draws! It's almost easier to go to ID...
