Using a light while hiking in?

I use a regular LED headlamp and just turn it off as I'm making my approach to the hunting spot.

Once I was hiking along a ridge in the bottomless pre-dawn, moonless dark by the light of a standard headlamp when I looked up and saw a bunch of eyes shining back. It was about a half dozen elk crossing over the ridge. Oddly they didn't spook, just looked at me and mozied along. I later caught up with them in a meadow down below. Didn't kill one that morning but I got pretty close. I really thought it was strange how little they seemed to care about the light. I guess they were up wind and couldn't make out my shape for glare in their eyes.
