Nina Simone wrote Strange Fruit. Billi'es version is amazing and I don't think you can underestimate the cultural impact that she had on America's view towards black Americans in the early 20th century, but I think Nina captured a much more raw emotion.

I actually hadn't heard the original... and yeah that is a raw version of a song that is raw to begin with.

I sometimes wonder the best way to view the cultural import of the cover when the cover is much more well known than the original... e.g.
