Trapping Thread 2025/2026

I can't tell y'all how much I hate fleshing raccoons.
i’m going to attempt fleshing for the first time pretty soon. Hoping i don’t screw it up too bad.

I might try using a power washer on a low quality skin to see if it works. I’ve seen several people use that method. Otherwise ill do it the old fashioned way.

I've never tried using a pressure washer I'll have to try it.

Report back on the pressure washer trick please. I’ve seen a ton of videos but in those they seem to be using the highest pressure which makes me think (like you said) would have to be really really careful.

One raccoon yesterday in a beaver set that makes 94. We got some rain and the pond came up all the castor mounds are under water. We went ahead and pulled everything might come reset it in a month if the weather allows. I did have a hairy moment pulling traps my son made all the sets so I didn't know the lay of the pond. I slipped off a ledge and went under. Filled my waders full of nice cold water. Luckily my daughter was on her way home form school so she was able to bring me some fresh boots and socks. The pond is right a long a busy blacktop but it has really good fence so I have to walk about 3/8 mile through a milo field to get there. I pulled the wet waders off and tossed them over the fence put my mud boots on and made the walk in my underwear and wet t shirt. Didn't help I have to wear coveralls for work that are denim and they were totally soaked so i took them off also so my dry boots and socks wouldn't get soaked

Haven’t caught a coyote off my bait yet in five days which is weird. No ravens there either. I had a mineral tub with goose carcasses froze in that I took home. That’s the only thing different than I usually do. Need a few coyote carcasses to toss in the open that will get the ravens working better

Trapping around here as been abysmal with the March-like weather. Granted, I’ve only been after otters. I got a few muskrats but there just hasn’t been anything moving through. Might have to switch to coons soon.

I bet the coons will stay pretty active in your warm weather this year!

They’re running around everywhere right now. Not my favorite to trap (I love water trapping) but the pheasants and turkeys sure appreciate it, so I’ll gladly do it.
Kinda why I’m doing it now too, for the pheasants, turkeys, and other birds. Not really able to be setup for skinning and fleshing anything right now.

What are you using for a fleshing knife?

After you get through the learning curve, it should be s breeze.

And, a proper knife with matching beam are way better than a power washer until your economy of scale is at hundreds of animals a day.

I’ve been doing a really poor job at taking pictures and doing updates, mostly because I don’t want to give up on deer season.

Deer ends Thursday, but so far season totals are:
17 raccoons
14 possums

I’ve only got about 1/5th of my traps out. I did set a bunch up today on my buddies place. He told me it’s never been trapped before and it’s 100 acres of prime thick stuff.

After Thursday it’s fixing to get ugly.

Had a big cat finally come into the set…didn’t go in the trap though.

Randomly got permission to trap some nearby ponds while at church this morning. I was told it was to remove beavers. Looks like maybe 1 or 2 beavers, but they have a serious muskrat issue. I think they were seeing rats and thinking they were beavers. I scouted and set 6 traps this afternoon(4 rat and 2 beaver). I’ll set 3 more muskrat sets in the morning.
