Trail cameras are great for gathering data, but like most capture devices they are capable of accumulating a tremendous amount of data. What are your strategies/tips for:

  1. Sorting through all the pictures/video you get?
  2. Storing the data?
  3. Patterning the animals so you can put all this info to use?

I did the following this year (my first year with trail cams, so I assume I’ll refine):
  • Browse all pictures and delete unnecessary (ie I had a raccoon family take up a lot of space)
  • Create a spreadsheet and log: date, time, weather, direction of travel, species, number of species
  • I made my spreadsheet on google sheets and dropped images in a google folder, allowed me to quickly link a target animal with a picture
After the google sheet was created I played around with sorting by columns - time, weather - to see if I could notice any patterns.
