Backyard boreal owl.
Interior Alaska has five common boreal owl species:
Great Gray, Great Horned, Northern Hawk, Short-Eared, and Boreal Owls.
Short-eared migrate, the other 4 species are year-round residents.
The Boreal Owl is the smallest (~10 inches) and the Great Gray the largest (~33 inches).

Dumb grouse that I jumped from it’s ground roost. Why do they just fly straight up into the tree above and wait to be shot?
