During the Civil War, Vermont forces played a key role in the Battle of Gettysburg.

On the death of President Warren G. Harding, in the flicker of kerosene lamps at Plymouth, Calvin Coolidge on August 3, 1923, took the oath of office as U.S. president, administered by his justice-of-the-peace father.


In the late 1700s, schoolteacher Justin Morgan developed the Morgan horse, the first breed originating in the United States.

In the 18th-century dispute between Vermont and New York, the Green Mountain Boys tore the roof from the home of New York supporter Benjamin Spencer. After he took an oath to support Vermont, the boys restored his roof.

Although ridiculed by some as a do nothing president, Calvin Collage had the support of many Vermonters who agreed the government should interfere as little as possible in the affairs of the people.

At the Haskell opera house at Derby Line the audience sits in the United States and the stage is in Canada. According to one account an American police officer once had to sit in the audience and watch a wanted criminal performing on the stage.
