Ok, my father in law sold me a nice BDL in 22-250, which I in turn had the barrel swapped out to 243, for my daughter who is 11... This gun, as well as my father in laws 7mm have had a thousand rounds each through them... well, this 22-250 maybe only 500 ?? But anyhow, NO issues with firing when closing the bolt...

So I asked this on a couple other sites and got MIXED responses... some have had 700's that never misfired.... some have had them do it... .

My thoughts are not to risk it...and just have Timney or some other trigger put in (got any recommendations)...

What would you do? What is your experience?

At one time in the past, Remington offered a $20 "fix" but that was years ago. In the 80s there was a problem with the metal used in the triggers and if I remember correctly Remington did take steps to correct this, The new Remington Pro-X trigger is said to alleviate the "problem" and I believe they'll fit in the older guns. I've studied the Remington trigger, safety and bolt and I don't know where the problem is at though I do have several thoughts. Several of my gunsmith friends think the problem crops up when there is to much lube in the trigger and safety and I've heard of Remingtons firing when the safety was switched off. If you've want to change the trigger, talk with the guy's at Brownell's and get thier take on it.

I own dozens of 700's n had my first miss hap this year. :-( Still checking gun out and making sure it won't happen again. I had my wife n kids along at the time so it was a good teaching lesson for my family to always be careful with gun n always point it in a safe direction!

From reading about it, its this "floating connector" that, if any debris gets near, it can change its location just enough to make the rifle fire with about any jarring or working of the bolt or whatever....

I watched the "expose" on tv last night. There is no true "safety" on a 700. Nothing blocks the pin.
I wouldn't have one of those for love or money.
Two ways to make them fire, one was flicking off the "safety", the other was to touch the bolt.

The Pro-X is the original trigger developers 1960 ish ? fix that Remington chose not to employ till now.

Seen it happen with my own eyes on my friends brand new, unmodified rifle. Took offense to Remington calling us a liar when he contacted them. They just continually refused that there was an issue. He never shot it again and gave the gun to a gunsmith (the guy is also a hunting guide and took it as a tip). If I owned a 700 now, the first thing I would do is put a Timney trigger in it!

I do agree that practicing good gun safety will prevent all accidents, but bottom line, the product does not work as it is intended to at all times. No gun is ever supposed to go off without pulling the trigger. That is a defect. The percentage of occurrance might be very small, but once is too many IMO.

Thanks SD, I've heard that quite a few times now.... I know with 5 millions + guns sold...and only a few injuries.... there is definitely room for Remington to play dumb, but it sure doesn't sound good to me.
