It was 2012 and after a few years of my cousin bugging to "start putting in for points" he had finally convinced my wife and I to submit our very first big game draw application in the state of CO. This year marked the first of us to put those points to use as she was able to draw a third season CO deer tag. My cousins significant other has also drew this same tag so there should be all kinds of good fun awaiting us over the next week. With an elk tag in my pocket and two other buddies that wanted to hitch along on the drive out with their own elk tags, we leave tomorrow.

@Oak perhaps I'll see you out there? It's right in your backyard :)

We are all packed, gassed up and ready to hit the road tomorrow!

Knowing the chaos that is opening day of 3rd season, we are intentionally skipping out on hunting Saturday and Sunday pretty much. The area we are going to gets hit pretty hard and although there will be very few deer hunts, the elk army will be out in full force.

It is very easy to tell if your driving with people that have never seen the mountains before. Face to the window and photos out snapping non stop photos.

I wonder if folks in CO have a name for these mountain newbies

I think I saw your pets on the way in @Oak . I'm sure that the pleasure I got from seeing a few bighorns along the interstate is somehow because of you.

This afternoon we drove a bit around to get the lay of the land, pressure and habitat. Saw 7 does and 3 bucks including a whopper 3x3 that had my wife super excited. Honestly I may regret not handing her her bullets. This buck was a bruiser, probably 24 wide with 8 to 10 inch length on the front forks and his top tine was at least 16 inches if not more.

I think we are in for a real treat here
