That other Rinella fella

I made a point to a friend and another about this.

Our widlife commission has a policy. And number one in that policy about what wildlife does is promote harvest of healthy food.

Number one complaint brought up in commission meetings, converstations, this and other boards....

Trophy quality.

Had a conversation the other day, and the other person said people need to stop shooting small bucks. I told him I'll shoot a small one on opening morning because I can.

We don't send off mature bulls to slaughter. We send of 1.5 to 2 year old steers.

And I think the 70 percent number he quoted is low.

We need to remove the word, and words that describe the word "trophy" from our vocabulary.

We need to focus on hunting for meat.

I like it all, i shot a forky mule deer buck on day one with my muzzle loader last year. Shot a small antelope buck as well. Thats enough meat to supplement my wife, daughter and I for over a year. We will go through that by this November or so.

I have a single tag this year for deer.

And I'm good with that.

The good Rinella. I disagree to some extent, some people will never kill an elk because elk hunting is hard. I know a guy with 3 elk tags this year and he could easily fill all of them. I also know several with 1 elk tag and chances are those won’t get filled. I get what he is saying though the influencers have crowded public land and spiked demand. He’s 100% right that it is better if you hunt quietly.

Wanton waste is the worst type of game offense. I can overlook a lot of crazy stuff but there is a lot of people that dont have food in this country and esp overseas.. God will not be kind to the wasters of resources.

It’s not unreasonable to go through a couple elk a year. More depending on how big the family is. I always laughed when people said they hunt to feed the family but with the price of beef maybe that is more of a reality.

Isn't that something? Richest country in the world and people still don't have food.

"Nobody needs to shoot multiple big bull elk a year"

Well counterpoint, I'd venture to say nobody I know needs to shoot any game to survive in this modern world. You'd almost always come out ahead by forgoing your hunting trips and picking up extra shifts at work and eating chicken.

The trophy side of hunting is deeply connected to the history of hunting. People have always prized certain aspects of the animals killed beyond just their usefulness for food or clothes.

I find plenty about the modern hunting industry distasteful, sometimes completely wrong, and often exploitative of the resource. But Matt Rinella and HQ consistently miss the mark in their critique.

First off that is no way 250 pounds of meat is it? And if you have a family of 4, lets say that is 250 pounds and if you eat it every day at a pound a day or more depending on what you cook, you could easily need 2, just saying. I don't disagree with him per say, but I guess you could shot a few deer instead of shooting 4 elk I guess. :)

The “focus on hunting for meat” sounds good, I have some of that sentiment myself. But there isn’t enough wildlife to feed very many people as a % in the country. There is a very, very small contingent that actually “hunts to feed their family”, and anyone on this forum that hunts out of state is most certainly not “hunting to feed their family”. My family eats game meat 4 or 5 nights a week/52 weeks a year, but there is no way that it even comes close to making sense strictly from an economic standpoint. Go hunting because it’s fun, go because it builds memories, go because it builds relationships with family, go because time spent in the wild cleanses your soul. Good on you if some meat is a by product of that, but don’t kid yourself that it’s economical…and if you hunt farm country don’t kid yourself that your venison is “organic”.
