1st zero I've in a few years.
1st decent snowfall in over a year. Got 6" Wed./Thurs. 50% of normal. Wet snow on rain, now powder.
Sunsnow yesterday. High wispies hitting the Yukon blast from the northlands. Sunny and its snowing Fri. Hit 24 with 15 breezes, so below zero WCF.
The Gila got a couple feet up high. Finally some snowpack.
Good snowfall across the state. At last.

Just hit -1...cool. 73 in the livingroom.
Heater came on while I restoked the stove at 0330.
Baselayers on, faucets dripping. Lots of good firewood.

Dotti coiled up on Her couch. LOL
She likes the snow but the cold, not so much. She stands by the stove like Rio did, feet on the corner of the hearth.

Just watched Rinella interview my Sen. Heinrich.
Discussing Our Public Lands. The issues we face.

Elk feeding to my loop in the moonlight earlier. 50 feet from my window.
They have stock trails coming from all sides now, to the water. Looks like stockyard next to the tanks.
Maybe I'll draw a tag this year...

Happy New Year HTer's!

Daughter keeps great weather records with running the farm. Last year fall was incredible wet, not that we had that much rain but it stayed cloudy and foggy between rains. We are on the edge of the high desert, you get rain then it clears up. We did end up with decent snow pack last year. Lots of cloudy and foggy weather.
This year has been nuts. Lot of rain and by her math the average temperature has been almost 15 degrees above normal since October this last week have improved some, we actually have a little snow at 3000 feet and starting to see some accumulation around 4500 or so. But not much. Today is +9 of average, it’s right at 32 currently.
The impact could be significant. We know that pine and spruce beetle populations are getting three flights a year instead of two, thats bad for those forests from NE Oregon well into Montana. Tics are not currently out but with out getting froze out there will be a lot next spring again.
If we don’t get snow pack, there is still plenty of time, hell one of the those California fires could burn all the way to the Charles M. Russel in Montana. Can’t believe I’m praying for cold weather and winter storms :)

Northeast Minnesota has been pretty normal when I look at the data. Of course the old timers have their stories of the cold snowy winters of yesteryear. November was a bit warmer than the 30 year averages but over half the days in December were below the 30 year average’s. Snow fall seems to be in the middle as well. Some years there is more snow by mid January, but there’s definitely been less some years.

We're having 20-30* nights and 50-60* days. The nights are about normal and days are a bit warmer. Occasionally in the past we have 50* swing days and nights when it drops to low twenties at night and a 70* day the following day. Next week it's supposed to be low to mid seventies for 4-5 days in a row. It should be 30*-40* 24 hours a day and snow season expected late January through early March.

The first thing I noticed when I saw the videos of the rioters in Minneapolis is that there is actually winter there

Heard from WI buddy and he said the spruce beetles have been ravaging Dakota trees.
IPPS have the pinions on the brink. Thousands of acres dead trees between me and AZ.
Been 10 to 20 degrees above normal for a year.
White Mtns. finally white.
Mogollon got a foot of snow.

10 now heading to 34. Looks like a week of warmer and dry ahead.
Bummer.

Spruce budworm infestation and pine beetle damage have weakened Montana forests. Now with the recent unusually strong winds, trees are toppling like crazy all over the place.
The trail to my hunting cabin is now blocked by huge dead Doug Fir, broken and flat on ground.
Road blocked near first culvert and old gate..jpg

Was able to chain up RZR and climb around the tree mess. Mild temps around the Gallatin Valley have kept snow from piling up, just enough for skiing and moisture levels appear to be okay. South facing slopes are pretty much bare. 'Not the usual snow around the cabin for this time of winter.

Dry as a popcorn fart here in central CO. Nearest ski area, Monarch on the Continental Divide has 24" of snow on the downwind, shady side of their ruler. Should be double that by now. Most days in the 60s here in Canon City , same for the next week. Haven't seen frost in the morning since I can recall. Very reminiscent of 76-77 and 80-81, both notorious La Nina "Years of Un" in the Colorado mountains.

I’m really not looking forward to fire season this year. It’s going to be a rough one is we don’t get some snowpack.

It's too early to begin the fire threat fret. There's enough to worry about that's real and happening now.
But keep us posted and if it's dry in April ... we'll fret with you.
