I want to say thank you for helping me on the the Elk Trip I am planning for 2017. I was at hunting show today and visited with all the outfitters. With the knowledge have gained here I was able to see thru one, who in turn got mad at me. He is outfitting in area 1 and right next to Thompson Falls. He tried selling me on how productive it was in his exclusive area. I started throwing some questions at him from reading your posts and talking with the local biologist. Come to find out his exclusive area is public ground that is accesed by atv, then walking down a forest service road. There was another guy there at the table interested and I asked the outfitter how many people like me would show up in his area. He proceeded to tell me that I like most people are too lazy to get off the road. I mentioned that I had been learning about that thru this forum. You could see the red start building in his face. Apparently he doesn't like public land hunter using their public land in his exclusive area.

So thanks, I wouldn't of known what I know now without all of your help and honestly it was kinda fun being knowledgeable enough to mess with him a little.

I could name the outfitter if given three guesses... :) Did he tell you the average bull he kills is a 300" 6x6? :) One of the most important facts of booking a good guided hunt is knowing enough to be able to sort fact from fiction. In all fairness to a lot of outfitters it's a vicious cycle. Many prospective clients have completely unrealistic expectations. In order to get them to book,a lot of outfitters tell them what they know they want to hear, despite knowing they can't produce.

If they just told the truth, they'd book a better quality client and would have happy customers.

There were several there, and all but two seemed on the up and up. We really appreciated the honesty of the rest. If I win that powerball I would of booked with one in particular just because he was a straight shooter and told it like it was, that I respected.

At the end of the day it did confirm our decision to DIY so I am glad we went.

If you booked with a straight shooter you'd have a good hunt whether you killed a bull or not. Same thing with coming out DIY. If you come for the experience of elk hunting you'll have a great trip every time. Sometimes you might kill an elk.

I bet it was Wayne Hill. He runs a unbelievable operation. Stay clear from him.
