Superior 7MM?

@BuzzH might be able to tell you if a 7mm-08 is worth having.

If you are looking for a lightweight rifle, and won’t be braking or suppressing it, I would stick with the 7mm-08, 284 Win, or 280 AI. I have a friend who shoots very well on steel out past 1000 yards with his 7mm-08 and 162 gr Hornadys. I have heard tales of elk being killed way out there with the same bullet in a 284 Win.

BTW - For me, “lightweight” and “longrange” don’t go hand in hand. I shoot more consistently with a heavier rifle.

I've been looking into the 284 Win, I dont know much about it. But it seems to bridge the gap between 7mm-08 and 280 AI really nice. Velocities aren't much lower in the 284 win at the 150 -160 gr. Projectiles. This might be a cartridge im into

I have a 7mm-08, 7mm mag, and 7 prc. I love all of them. The 7mm-08 has killed the most animals BY FAR because it was the go to for me for many years before I got the 7 prc and is now both of my sons go to rifle. I think a lot is dependent on the use, but you already have a .300 wsm, I would lean toward the 7mm-08 even though my 7 pro may be my favorite rifle currently.

Thats what im beginning to feel something more along the lines of the 7-08 or 284 win. What do you like more about the 7 PRC over the 7 mag

Great question. To be honest, I like the 7 prc because I built it. The 7mm mag is fine. It's a Savage 110 and is very accurate. It's just pretty basic stock, blued barrel, etc. It's technically my father in law's rifle that he's let me long term borrow for over a decade now. So, I can't do much with threading the barrel or anything, which I would prefer to do to install a break or suppressor. The 7 prc, I have run both a break and a suppressor. It shoots great with either one. It's built off of the Howa 1500 action. The 7 mag has taken 2 elk for me and a whitetail back when I lived in TX. The 7 prc took its first deer this year (I just built it this last spring). Here's the 7 prc with a doe I shot this year and the 7 mag with a cow elk I took in 2023. Like I said. I like both. When I decided to build my rifle, I looked at ballistics and for the most part the 7 prc just outperforms the 7 mag. Not by a lot, but by a little.James WyDeerd 11.2025.jpg

Looking for a bit of advice. I currently have a Howa 1500 in 300 Win Mag, original barrel is starting to lose accuracy, thinking I'd like to join the suppressed world. Since I'm getting a new barrel a 20 inch 7mm PRC sounds appealing. I don't mind giving up the velocity, ran ballistics calculations at my probable hunting elevation and the factory loads (-300 fps) from box are still above minimum impact velocity for expansion at 500+ yards. I'm an ok 300 - 350 yard shooter from supported field positions.

Thoughts, opinions and concerns about going from 300 Win Mag to 7mm PRC on that action. Also will be upgrading to a Timney trigger and a nice carbon fiber stock if I go this route.

I've got a 7mm Mauser AI that spits 140 grain TTSX's at 3000 FPS. Very little recoil. Drops critters pretty well. If you want a short action, then I'd look at AI'ing the 7mm-08.
Growing up, my dad had a 7×57. His pet load was 175 grain partitions loaded at 2300 - 2400 fps. Great deer rifle.

Over the last sixty years I have acquired center fire rifles from 22 Hornet to 577 nitro, covering just about every niche inbetween.
Had the privilege of hunting from Pt. Barrow Alaska to the Eastern Cape of South Africa. I’m getting a little long in the tooth but still get around pretty good and being retired get to spend quite a bit of time hunting.
About 30 years ago I had seen enough success with various 7mm cartridges I had come to the conclusion that .284/160 gr was just about perfect for elk-deer-bear and most african plains game.
I’ve started selling off guns. The fast 33s are gone; only one 375 and only a 300 HH remain in magnum cartridges. My favorite rifle the last couple years has been a 7x57 loaded well north of factory ballistics, giving it a slight edge on the 708.
All that being said I’m currently shopping for a #1 to send to Paul. I’m simply looking for good wood. I’ll have him re-barrel it to a 280AI, do his magic and I’ll be set for the next decade. Good luck, a 7/08 will serve you well.

It will work just fine, my 7Prc is made off a M70 control feed that was a 300Wm.
Works very well and very accurate. You should use at least a 8twt but some are going with 7.5 for a short barrel.
Just a thought.🎄
