Superior 7MM?

@DamascusSteel,

Superior in what way?
Hunting rifle?
Realistic distances?

As for the "heavy for caliber bullets", are you shooting 1,000 yard Benchrest?
Or 24X24 plate at 3 miles?
Really the only place that you need "heavy for caliber".

Elk at 1,000+ yards? The GunWerks guys have been doing that with the 7mm Rem Mag and 168gr Berger VLD for years.

I have/shoot/hunt with 7mm-08AI, 280 Rem, 284 Win, 7mm Rem Mag and 7mm WBY Mag.

I really don't feel undergunned with the 7mm-08AI and a 140gr Ballistic Tip. If it makes you feel better, go with an Accubond or Partition.

My Weatherby is a Mark V Weathermark LT. Light weight. Shoots well. Even with the 1:10 twist, I haven't had any issues shooting the 175gr ABLR out to 800 yards.

But normally 168gr is the heaviest that I go.

Heavy for caliber has been a great sales hook. mtmuley

Can’t go wrong with the tried and true 7mm. It has probably killed more elk than all the others combined. Recoil can be an issue but with a brake a 12 year can shoot….. with a good set of ear plugs.

Fixed it for you

Just anecdotal as I don’t have 50 flavors of chamberings to test and choose from, but I find myself almost exclusively reaching for my Howa Alpine 7mm-08 when going out anymore. Great rifle, great cartridge. Some clear tradeoffs between that and a 7 Rem Mag, but I’m sure you’re aware of the pros and cons of both. I’ll personally take light, maneuverable, comfortable, and accurate any day for my own needs. Plus, there’s a few well known users on this forum that kill piles of just about any species with the cartridge, so it’s certainly capable. (My own capability sample pool is quite a bit smaller)

That said, I’d have 100% bought something in .280 AI if I hand loaded or if there was decent factory ammo support for that seemingly perfect cartridge.
