Superior 7MM?

I have been debating on saving up and buying a more premium rifle, one that is on the lighter side. I am looking at a 7mm this go around, I have a 300 WSM Savage 110 that I love, but its heavy. Is it worth bumping up to a 7 mag when 7mm-08 exists? I was looking at the Weatherby Mark V in 7mm Wby Mag but the twist rates tend to limit your heavy for caliber bullets and the 7mm PRC solves that but something about the 7mm-08 really intrigues me. I've killed one deer at about 220 yds with a 7mm-08, my wifes uncle let me borrow the rifle for the hunt. What y'alls opinions and recommendations?

The only solid reason to bump from a 7-08 to a 7mmRM is to shoot longer distance and/or more velocity on 160s.

I play the math on different 7mm rounds all the time. I shoot a 280ai because I want higher velocity on 160ABs (for elk) and the off possibility I’ll shoot past 400, which I rarely do.

Short answer - 7-08 is a good choice.

I think it comes down to what you will use it for.
I have a 7mm-08 and a 7mm Rem Mag.
Both have their bright spots, with the 7mm-08 being way more fun to shoot off the bench.

I've got a 7mm Mauser AI that spits 140 grain TTSX's at 3000 FPS. Very little recoil. Drops critters pretty well. If you want a short action, then I'd look at AI'ing the 7mm-08.

Agree with this. I have a 7mm Rem Mag Seekins Precision and it is a tack driver and then some if I do my part. It does have some recoil to it, which is not unexpected but I have a muzzle brake on it and it recoils like an AR at that point. Depends on what you're wanting to accomplish like the previous post. If you can reload and just getting into getting a 7mm, get a 7 PRC if not I would get a Rem Mag but again it depends on what you're wanting to do with it. I'm looking to get a 7mm-08 but it would be for my daughter and a step up from .223.

.280AI would be my vote, especially since Weatherby is of the few chambering the Mark V in that caliber. I have the Mark V Backcountry in .280ai, I do NOT reload and I still really like it. Super light, easy to carry. Probably doesn’t make as much since without reloading with cost of ammo but I got used to paying $50/box during Covid and it’s a hunting rifle so not like I’m shooting hundreds or thousands of rounds a year.

A Tikka T3x 7mm08 sounds like what you need. 7mm08 is a fantastic cartridge that I’d glad hunt to 400-500yds with the correct bullet choice for the game I’m chasing.

Rogue summit hunter on YouTube has a lot of videos on reloading and long range 7mm08

I have owned a 7 magnum of some sort, all my adult life... My wife's 280ai, the 7-08, and 6.5cm see more range time and feild time... I've owned a 7prc for 3 years and only taken it on 1 hunt and it has less than 200rds through it. When a 7 mag was my only, I used it more but now that I have options I go with liter recoil... The only way I would get another magnum is it I thought I would need to kill something regularly at over 800yards... If you reload, 280ai, 7-08, or 284win is where I'd be. The 7-08 and 6.5cm have pretty similar ballistics on paper... I'm planning on carrying the 6arc this year in ND and MT.
