Straight walled rifle?

The slug gun has been proven to be higher risk than even 30-06 180gr bullet. PA had a military ballistics lab do a study on potential down range risk from 12ga 350gr sabot, 30-06 180gr versus 50cal mz 150gr pellets 250gr sabot. I posted up complete study in the PA semi auto thread. I also used this study in 2009 for the support of the MI straight wall rule.

Would you ever choose to use a straight wall cartridge in an area that does not require them?

One piece of property I hunt: I’m very conscious of the houses creeping closer each year. And I do wonder, however improbable it might be, that a 308 round would travel to one of those homes.

So, I’m beginning to wonder about a slug gun or a straight wall gun.
Of course. Why would you use anything else?

I've hunted with a 45-70 by choice many times.

Arkansas does not have a case length limit for their straight wall season, so I usually hunt with a .38-55 in that season.

There is always the 357 Maximum.

Think elongated 357 Mag.
Its such a fun cartridge too. My buddy wanted a SHTF rifle that he could shoot 38spl, 357mag, and 357max out of since he has piles and piles of ammo for them, except Max. I helped his wife order a Henry single shot in 357mag, sent it out to be reamed to Max, and I worked up a 180gn XTP load and loaded 200 for him. It came out awesome, and the velocity on the 357max was impressive. I have no need for one, and 350L and 360BH are right there with much easier to source brass, but its still a cool cartridge.

A .357 Max is fun cartridge, .357 Mag and 38Spl can be shot just for fun. I stumbled onto Nosler .357 180Partitions from Widners. They found a bunch when they were moving into new warehouse. The cool part was clearance price of $20/box 50. Yes, I stocked up. They shoot extremely well at 200yds. They are 2200fps and wished I bought more. The next day all gone.

The Hammer .358 140SH is crazy fast, accurate at MOA @200yds and I need to whack something with it.

Just moved back to NH and there are so called "shotgun only" areas for deer. The description actually says "rifles with straight walled handgun cartridges .357 or greater"

I have a ruger in .44 mag, i have this question in to NH FG as well. The rifle shoots .44 mag handgun loads, is that what is described above?
Welcome back to NH Bob, lakes region here and spend a decent bit of time in Pittsburg. Your 44mag is good to go and will do just fine. Xbow would also be a good fit for those areas and extend your hunting another 3 months.

I hunted coastal blacktails within northern California when I was with USAF at Travis AF Base. My only rifle was a Marlin 44 MAG and I dropped many bucks with this outfit. TR

Curious how this supports straight walled cartridges and not the bottle neck cartridges it showed as lower risk? Pretty sure this is the same study Indiana used and ultimately Governor Pence signed into law allowing those cartridges on private land for hunting in Indiana?
