On opening day of CA turkey season I harvested a nice tom first thing in the morning off some decoys. Nine hens a jake and a tom came off their roosts and landed on the other side of the horse paster, so i hit my box call and they started feeding to my decoys, when the tom seen my jake decoy mounting one of the hen decoys he ran streight to it and strutted at it ,circled it turning his back to my so i drew back and put an arrow in his pump station, he ran 10yds. and fell over. He had a 8" beard. Heres the pic.

Tom, I am also from Central Cal. All of the birds at lower elevations are Rios or hybrids. There are Merriams at higher elevations. Worked on some transplants with NWTF and the Forset Service before DF&G shut them down due to the threat of lawsuits. Easterns were transplanted at one time in NW California but I have not heard of anyone taking one. I did take a couple of nice Merriams in Arizona and New Mexico this year.
