Had a great hunt in the Snake River unit in Oregon.

We killed one bear off in a pretty good hole. Still wasn't as springy and green as I was hoping for. Did manage to see a cougar, a couple of coyotes and a pile of deer and elk.

The mules did great, which always makes me happy.

This is us going down after the bear. I'm not sure if the photos really show the steepness, but it was very steep.

It bluffed off right here, so I tied the mules up and we hand carried the quarters up.

They got to rest for about an hour, while we took care of the bear and packed meat and hide

Here are a few pics packing up the quarters, and of course a close up of the happy hunter, who made us all work hard that morning. It was great !

Digging out of the hole, back to the ridge line so we can hike out to the pickup.

Closing Pics

Almost back to the truck, 4.25 hours down, another 45 minutes to go.

And then, of course, the pic of the bear with my buddy.

I've hunted that country a lot and it is some of the steepest, most beautiful country there is. Thanks for sharing your adventure. Some nice long claws on that bear.

That even looks steep in pictures - and you and I know that pics tend to dull the steepness factor!
Great pics of beautiful country.
Congrats and thanks for sharing.

You are mistaken, there are no chukars there :D

Those are really nice looking mules. How do they handle the bear smell?

Bear smell doesn't bother them at all. They've packed out quite a few bears, even though it has been a handful of years. I was careful loading them however, making sure that they were going to be okay.

I put a quarter up to their faces before loading, letting them get the smell out of the bear out of their system. No problems at all. I think they were too tired to care.
