I was fortunate to be invited to my friends ground in the county of Dorset this week, I also dragged another friend along.
The first evening was a high seat outing, frustratingly I saw a Sika stag emerge from the woods, but not jump the fence onto my side, then it magically disappeared.
Behind me in the timber a Stag let out a series of 3 whistles, around 50 yards away, but damned if I could see it!
I climbed out of the seat to return to the truck and there it was, skylined!
The Schmidt and Bender 8x56 made it shootable...but unsafe.
I heard the crack of a rifle in the distance, my mate got his stag, using a 7x57
The following morning all 3 of us headed out and the Stags were whistling in the mist.
Hinds a plenty, but we couldn't pick out any stags.
However, Lady Luck shined down on me, a stag emerged at 200 yards, my mate used the call to bring it in but he wasn't having any of it.
So I settled onto my quad sticks to contemplate making the shot, but in my left ear a whisper came, look left!
I couldn't believe it, we have no idea where it came from, but it trotted not 50 yards away in front of us, I didn't hesitate, the 6.5 swede sounded and it never knew what hit it, really pleased with my Sika Stag, but damn I'm looking old!
