Saw this dead tarantula today, still creeped me outHunted pronghorn down there the first year that I lived in CO. Was prepping my muzzleloader at the range and chitchatting with a guy who'd hunted down there before. Told him which unit I'd be hunting.
"Oh yeah... the tarantula migration ought to be about done by then."
"The what now?"
Reader: the tarantula migration was in full-swing as your humble correspondent tried to camp in the midst of it.

I know of researchers keeping their eyes on around a half dozen bears in Cimarron County Oklahoma around black mesa. Sure looks like bear crap. Never seen any scaled quail on the Colorado side but have on the Oklahoma side of course that's where I spend most of my time. They're out there somewhere.Or what kind of scat this is? In NW CO, you’d think bear but it was all over the place down here. Can’t be that many bears down here.View attachment 393948View attachment 393949

Without a scale, I'd say coyote.Or what kind of scat this is? In NW CO, you’d think bear but it was all over the place down here. Can’t be that many bears down here.View attachment 393948View attachment 393949
I saw more of those than I can count on our 5 days there. The warden told us to shoot as many as we could when we were out calling, there was no shortage.Without a scale, I'd say coyote.
I should know that. This Charles Bronson classic is one of my favorites, set in eastern or SE CO.Watermelons.
That part of the state is big watermelon farming country. Probably got planted by a bird or other animal if I had to guess.
Sparse country is an accurate description. And miles of it.Saw a pheasant once south of Campo. Goodluck some sparse country.
I think you’re right.Google image search says coyote gourd.
They occasionally come on to the mesa in Oklahoma been fortunate enough to see them twice. There's elk, bears, turkeys, mountain lions and bighorn sheep in SE Colorado. Wouldn't have believed the sheep if I hadn't seen them with my own eyes
