Here in Washington's Cascade Range, on the drier, east side. Came across two small groups of elk yesterday, surprisingly late in the morning. Very sunny, about 60 degrees up at the 4,000 - 5,500' level where I found them. One group was in the marshy area next to a pond. The other high on a ridgeline, but still in the forest.
I didn't try to get very close to them, but managed to snap a photo or two:
They look healthy & strong, moved off easily. Not unduly alarmed by my presence. I'm going to be bowhunting them in September. Nice to find 'em on my first scouting trip of the year.
