Here in Washington's Cascade Range, on the drier, east side. Came across two small groups of elk yesterday, surprisingly late in the morning. Very sunny, about 60 degrees up at the 4,000 - 5,500' level where I found them. One group was in the marshy area next to a pond. The other high on a ridgeline, but still in the forest.

I didn't try to get very close to them, but managed to snap a photo or two:

They look healthy & strong, moved off easily. Not unduly alarmed by my presence. I'm going to be bowhunting them in September. Nice to find 'em on my first scouting trip of the year.

Hopefully that is a sign of things to come this fall. Nice photo.

Nice when it works out that way on the first trip. If you get a chance, swing down to NE New Mexico and scout 45 for me. Thanks

I'd love to make another trip to the southwest and scout some hunting areas there! But it's not going to happen this year. Best of luck this season!
