Rout Natl' Forrest

Looking for info on the Elk population in the Routt Natl' Forrest around the Steamboat Springs, Co. Is it a possible area to find bulls. I have never hunted this area and need basic info if anyone is willing to help...thank you...

Call the CPW office that is closest to where you want to hunt and see if they will give you the biologist contact info.

I can't help with Steamboat area numbers, never hunted there.

to billy-bob8/i have a tag in unit 4/441 (2nd season-cow)by steamboat/have there been any fires there recently or what else can you tell me about the area/any help would be appreciated thanks

Second season cow can be tough in some of the areas. I used to hunt the California Park area and we found out the hard way that many of the elk bail onto private ground when the shooting starts the first season. You may have to dig the ones that are left out of the deep timber. After we went second season the first year, it was nothing but first season from then on.

We always killed animals, though. Be ready to go in at first light and out at last light and you will find animals.
