Representative Billy

Hard to tell from just those pics. But I think that's a youngster. 3-year old is my guess.

Anyone have a link to a good thread on sizing up billies? I feel like I've seen some nice one's while elk hunting and it was a no brainer...I've been on a couple scouting trips this year and will be tagging along on a hunt in a couple weeks. I've spent a lot of time understanding billy vs. nanny but big billy vs small billy is different.

I've heard the horse face thing, nose dished out vs in is another indicator. I also read in one of greenhorns threads from a while back about glands being visable and a small space between the bases being another indicator of thick bases.

I'm all ears. I think it would be easy to get tricked if you are just looking at horn to head size ratio as a young billy could look reasonable if he has small facial features.

His body habitus says young goat to me. Slim, no hanging gut, flat nose profile, no huge shoulder hump, no horse face.

I thought judging antelope is tricky. These goats take it to the next level

Hot tip someone gave me. A truly mature (big) billy will look like a white buffalo, he will also look distinctly different than all the other goats. In my observations they tend to act like the king of the mountain.

As others have mentioned you will know it when you see a big one. I spotted mine last year from about 2 miles away and I knew instantly that it was one to go after.
