Intent. It is clear that Trump's intent is to drive US companies away from Canada's products and that hurts Canada. And the broad economic downturn from a trade war hurts all producers, foreign and domestic. There's more to the milk tariffs too. The US doesn't export enough milk to Canada to meet the limit where tariffs begin to be imposed.

For every 1 job in the US producing steel or aluminum there are 50 jobs that use steel and aluminum to make products. So your prices are going up.

You want to start a thread on milk, go ahead. The US taxpayer subsidizes the hell out of US milk production, just like Canada subsidizes lumber production. There is a lot of nuance around what is "fair trade" or "free trade" regarding any item.

Anecdotally, my employer purchases a lot of domestic aluminum subject to the Buy America Act, meaning we can’t use imported products. We also have stringent specifications to meet, so we can’t use different alloys. There are only so many domestic mills, and they have a finite production capacity. Now every manufacturer who has hitherto imported aluminum is ordering from the same few domestic mills. Demand has increased, pricing has increased, and lead times have increased.

Per lb prices are already up 25% YOY, mostly occurred in YTD. Prior to today’s additional tariffs (and further nonsense about annexing Canada) our suppliers were already forecast another 10-12% rise next month. I’m sure that’ll be adjusted upward even further.

No idea. I'm not an expert on Canadian milk production. One would assume Trump knows more about their intent since he negotiated it. But US exports of milk have never reached a high enough quantity to experience any tariff at all. There might be other protectionist policies Canada is doing, but the tariff is a red herring.

Canadian dairy is different than American dairy. One of the big differences is all milk produced in and sold in Canada must rbST (artificial growth hormone) free. Dairy products made in the US cannot be guaranteed to be hormone free. The US industry produces almost 94 billion L of milk compared to Canada’s 8.5 billion L. Canada also has significantly less dairy farms. Canada is right to protect its dairy industry. Not only for its stricter regulations but to protect its place in the industry. The US govt also heavily subsidizes the American dairy industry. If Canada allowed a flood of American dairy then it would be a huge blow to our domestic production.
