Rating an Outfitter

Depending on what you wanna spend I’d highly recommend New Mexico jump in the outfitter draw pool and you got pretty decent odds. I’ve only hired one guide we drew tags and decided to go that route I made 3-4 phone calls choice was easy after that

Agreed. We’re leaning towards Colorado, but not really sure how things are affected with the way Colorado’s change things around.

What changes are you referring to? Unless you're talking archery OTC, I don't think the proposed draw changes will go into effect until 2028.

I didn’t know if things are affected for outfitters with recent change proposals is all.

Network with people you know, ask your Taxidermist, Meat Processor, guys at the Gun Store, etc.

If you’re looking at CO one of the best anywhere is out of Grand Junction. Has access to private ranches and tens of thousands of BLM land virtually only accessible through the private in the top unit in state for elk, mulie, lion. Elk is very expensive but you’ll have legitimate chances at a B&C bull. He is not inexpensive but if you want a trophy he’s the guy.

absolutely this. without a doubt your likely best option but it isn't necessarily a 100% guarantee your going hunting next fall unless you want to also get the landowner tag for the unit and stay then with the outfitter that helped you in the draw.

The problem with outfitter reviews is the clientele. Some are just happy to be there, some expect B&C animals behind every bush, some cant walk more than 50 yards without needing to stop and catch their breath, and so on.

I never thought I'd be asking for info on outfitters, as my son and I have always hunted on public land. We have limited time with him, and she is pushing me to take him on a guided elk hunt. She's a keeper for sure!

Anyway, I'm not even sure how to do my own research on which State and which outfitters "score" the best. Is there even a service like that? Something like Google reviews / Trip Advisor type for outfitters?

My concern is that you have these companies like Huntin' Fool, Rolling Bones, etc that can tell you.. but I don't know if they are getting kick backs in referring the outfitters and/or if they have their "go to" only...

Just asking because I don't know where even to begin. Also, it's not going to be a "Joe Rogan" guided hunt price-wise, but it won't be a low-cost one either.

Hello Turkey Nut from New Mexico here, i know of three outfitters that do elk hunts on public land and private , they have gotten some nice bulls over the years, the bulls here in New Mexico run in the 320's to 350 , and some in the wilderness are 380 to 400 class which is a hard hunt , let me know if i can help you out,

Hello sir,Turkey Nut here, from New Mexico , see where you are looking for a Outfitter, have a good friend who dose all kinds of hunts and he and guides are great ,Goggle Mean Muley Outfitters ,ck him out.

My one and last experience with World Trophy Adventures was not good. After 20 years of points and thousands of dollars worse hunting experience for me ever. From their website and discussions with the consultant it was agreed that we would be hunting 310-340 inch bull elk. I told them directly that I was just retired with a bad knee and would be happy hunting 310-320 bulls. Once I arrived in camp I found they raised the minimum to 340". The guide provided was very good and agreed it would be tough to find a 340 bull since the herd in the area was still recovering from the 2023 winter. Seen one bull glassing the night before the hunt started that may have gone 340 but was told that part of the lease couldn't be hunted. Two days later two new hunters showed up and the one was given permission to hunt the bull. I was a draw hunter they had landowner tag so spent a lot more money then myself. Guide called them high rollers. Has many opportunities at 320-330 bulls but was told we couldn't hunt the, WTA is to big of service with 900 outfitters there is no way to Vet every one like the smaller consultants do. So you may get a good one or get screwed like me. WTA should support the client but they side on their outfitters because of the revenue. Any negative comments on their website are scrubbed to make it look like its all peaches and cream when its not. Stick with the smaller consultants who vet their outfitters.
