A few months back I posted a story about an antelope hunt my friend Jon and I went on. http://onyourownadventures.com/hunttalk/showthread.php?t=244206 His dog Stan was along on the trip. Normally I'm a "dogs belong in the back of the pickup" type of guy but we threw a blanket in the back seat of my Chevy and Stan was a well behaved passenger and a joy to have along.

My family and I have been back in Virginia for a couple of weeks so I hadn't talked to Jon for several weeks. He called me this afternoon and in the course of conversation asked if I'd heard about his dog.

I was floored when he told me Stan had been killed by wolves. He was out on his brother's ranch running Stan in front of the truck so he could get some exercise. This was a normal routine for them and when Stan headed up into the woods he didn't think anything was out of the ordinary. After Stan didn't come back, he began to suspect the worst. His worst fears were realized when he found his dog dead.

It makes me sick to my gut just thinking about it and its not even my dog. I for one will be a very happy camper when we can put a wolf tag in our pockets once again.

For years I've hunted blue grouse between Bozeman and YNP. Now with the bad dogs spread all around these parts, there are some places that I will not bring my dog to anymore. And many other places that we still hunt, I keep her really close....wolf crap, tracks, etc. Their presence adds an unpleasant wrinkle to what should be nothing but fun.
G Bears and lions are one thing, wolves are another. I personally find wolves to be a pretty cool critter....but I don't underestimate them. I've begrudgingly given up a few old haunts to their presence. But,between my brown girl and a bad dog...if it comes down to it, the lead is flying. Hope it never does.
Oh, yeah, losing your best bud for any reason sucks....that particular way, man. I may find wolves cool, but I kinda wish things were as they use to be.
Wish in one hand, crap in the other......

That is one bad deal GM. Looking at the pics you can tell he was part of the family.

My day is going from bad to worse.

My family has two dogs, a lab mix and a mut we rescued from the street.
The lab is 13, and the mut 14+. The mut, Shelly, has been acting old and weak the last year, She is deaf, almost blind. This morning, she coughed up some blood. We made her some food, and after eating, there was more blood in the bowl. I think her day are numbered. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow, I don‘t think she will see next weekend.

Sorry to hear that. It's amazing how much dogs become a part of the family. We have a min pin that is 14yrs old and is going downhill. My dad and I raised min pin's for quite a few years and paid for a whole lot of college with the proceeds and this is the last one left. It will be very hard on my wife when Rouskie dies.
