Up until about a week ago, it looked like I was gonna be eating a hearty bowl of tag soup. Luckily, a week off of work and Grandma to watch the little one allowed my wife and I to get busy- pun intended
. First, a short solo trip to Freezeout with a few of Ratfinks swan decoys proved to be successful in getting my second swan ever, and first fully mature one. This guy didnt fully decoy, but he gave a close enough look for the Benelli to roar.
A day after the swan, Laura and I went to our antelope district and drove around for hours glassing fruitlessly as all the goats were either super skittish or on private land. On the second day, at literally the last hour (hence the pics in the dark unfortunately), we spotted a distant herd and made a stalk. I gave my wife honors and ranged a nearby hill. She made a spectacular shot to bag her first antelope. I was fortunate to pick off another female as they scattered in the confusion after her shot. The best part, other than my wife's huge smile, is for the her nagging about "When you gonna get some tasty antelope?" to end
.
Lastly, we went on the prowl for deer, with my wife really hoping for her first buck. We stalked to about 150 yards from a bedded 4x4, but the rangefinder couldnt pick him up and I misjudged him to be only 100 yards which proved costly as we were using a slug gun. Unfortunately she missed, and she wanted me to try when he jumped up and looked around. I aimed a bit higher than what I told her to do, and the slug found its mark. I felt pretty bad about misguiding her, but in the end we had a great time together and a freezer full of meat. My wife is really getting bit by the hunting bug now, and that makes me happiest of all!
