Public Land Trail Cam Etiquette

You find a trail cam on public land, do you...

I sit next to a fish biologist at work. He did the trail cam at the boat launch technique to count anglers and when he told me boat launches get used for anything and everything, he really meant it.
I second that.

Im actually surprised more information isn't shared to biologists from private trail camera owners. The public probably has decades worth of information in a single year and at zero cost to taxpayers.
They do use private trail cam data for studies, at least here in MN. One instance was for a gut pile study, but I think there may have been others as well.

ODFW will record a note on something if it's interesting (ie wolverine) but only wants to use data collected from their randomly deployed cameras. They'll set out a grid and randomize the locations of cameras and then send some poor technician 4 miles down a wilderness trail and have them drop 2000 ft elevation into a canyon if that's where the randomized point is.

@Elky Welky legal question.

Having removed caches (ie gear stashed on public land) as part of my job for the FS and other agencies, as well as calling in caches in multiple states with multiple agencies, what materially would separate a game camera from any other private property abandoned on public land longer than the 16-day limit?

Just depends what your integrity is worth.

There is no special exemption for trail cameras left longer than 16 days. Regardless of how you feel Jack, it is considered abandoned by law. When I hang cameras it's an assumed risk that they may be removed, which you may think of as stolen without knowing the truth.

Had a couple stolen last year, another one this year. Wised up and the ones I still have on public land have locks.

Had a ground blind stolen by I assume the same guy last year. Blind was left after sunset and we were back well before sunrise to see it gone the next morning. He came in the middle of the night. Got a picture of him as I mounted a well hidden camera 8 feet up looking down at the blind. Lots of people will be watching for him this season as others who hunt the area had stuff taken and vandalism as well.

Can you give everyone a general idea on the location of this Night Ranger?

A few years ago Nevada limited their use to off season and they must be pulled by August 1. I’ve been pleasantly surprised not to see any cams after then.

I usually just wave, as others have said, it is not mine, leave it alone. I would thrill me no end to have my picture taken packing a big bull or buck right by someone else's camera.

That person is me sometimes!

Honestly the worst is trying to find the cameras someone else put out. They'll GPS mark it without making sure the damn thing isn't bouncing around all over the place first, and we're rarely allowed to mark/paint anything on public or tribal lands. Thankfully no one really messes with them because they're often put in ridiculous places.
