I hate to brag but I possibly killed the all time smallest Roosevelt spike ever killed yesterday. I decided to forgo archery season for the second time in my adult life this year since I had a long hunt planned in Nevada in September. Planned to hunt first season rifle but when it came around my back was acting up enough that walking was a problem so that was out. Second season here is spike only and I’ve never been interested in it but it came down to that or nothing and my back eased up on me two days before it started.

I found a small group of elk the second day and snuck within 150 yards and noticed one was trailing a cow around and was shocked to see it was in fact a legal bull once I got the binocs on it. I honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing and considered not shooting him until the reality of spike only season settled in and I realized it didn’t make much sense to sort through spikes to find a big one. One shot and he died a quick easy death. Looking forward to some potentially tender elk steaks for sure. Of course as I was gutting him a “great big” spike walked out about 80 yards away and looked things over. He had at least 16” spikes.

What do you think, all time record or have you seen smaller?
