Yet: I refuse to hunt with a loaded rifle off of one. I'll quietly putt up to as close as is rational, and THEN sneak in to where I'm going to hunt. But, if I just so happened to run across and nice buck while getting to my spot, I'm not so nihilistic as to think that I wouldn't shoot him. Still, if it ever gets to the point where I can't hunt without one, well maybe I should consider another way to get my venison.

Dave remember here in California, that is a loaded weapon "in a vehicle". It is also illegal to shoot off one unless you have a disable hunter permit. CALTIP loves to hear of people shooting off them.

Same with Colorado...the DOW has their own personnel and volunteers that glass with high powered spotting scopes and if they see you in violation, uh-oh...whatcha gonna do when they come for you?!?! :D

Err... basicaly meant to say that I don't (or wouldn't) load the magazine (and no bullet in the chamber) and ride trails until I jumped a legal buck. I have a lot of distain for that sort of activity. It sure isn't hunting, but I've seen countless people on quads trying to pull it off that way. Yeah, they do shoot a few nice bucks doing that, but it appears to me that they seem to have forgotten how to walk and stalk.
Saw a funny incedent a few years back. A game warden had pulled over a half dozen atv riders for doing exactly what Scottymack is talking about. These guys were driving on a country/national forest maintained fire road and all had shells in the magazine (in other words: roadhunting) I wonder how much all those tickets cost?

I use one, a Polaris Ranger 6x6 in CO when we hunt at my cabin. Beats driving a pickup or Jeep on the same road and hoping you make it to the parking lot alive. Some spots are a little hairy even in on an ATV. Takes about a third of the time to get to the parking area.

Thats pretty much the only place I've ever used one to "hunt". Really just transportation over rough road, and used to haul elk back out.

I use mine to scout and get back into areas so I don't beat the shit out of my truck, and on occasion even get to throw a deer, elk, or javelina on it! I don't see anything wrong with using them responsibly and IMO are fun as hell to get out and explore new terrain on!
