Petition to mandate hunters to carry bear spray in Montana.

I just saw this article and thought I would share.

While I am a fan of carrying bear spray in certain scenarios or if that's what you are most confident in. I oppose the thought of being mandated to carry it. It just seems like another frivolous push by animal right activists.

Similar petitions failed in Wyoming and Idaho. I don't see it making much of an impact on the bear numbers. Of the 6 or 7 killed in defense how many were hunters? How many of those wouldn't still be killed in defense?

Making someone carry it doesn’t mean it will be used. I’ve seen things that say your better off to carry one or the other and people that carry both have a delay on pulling either one due to trying to decide on which tool is best for the situation.

You just can’t fix stupid. The way this reads, some trapper or hunter in SE corner of the State would have to pack bear spray to be following the letter of the law. Lots of bears over there

Some of those craft beers might have the same effect as the bear spray.If you spray something in the face with em.

Most hunter interactions with bears, at least on the east side of the divide, are bird hunters. According to fwp bear guy.
Mandating is pointless but bird hunters probably should think about bear spray.

Why single out hunters? I thought we were a statistically and economically insignificant, slowly dying minority? At least that is what the anti-hunting folks in Colorado tell us all the time. Why not focus on hikers and bikers and wildlife watchers? I always love the “public safety” justification. Everything in the name of “public safety”. Gotta love citizen petitions to the commission. At least you all have a decent commission to lean on…..

California is trying to get bear spray banned as illegal in national parks - who says there’s a difference in politics.

Gotta love when people try to regulate activities they don’t participate in and in ways that address a tiny problem. Someone better push for requiring insulin be purchased with any dessert type food. Never know when diabetes might grab hold…
