Painting a rifle stock

My middle daughter has taken a sudden interest in shooting and hunting. After a few questions, I found out that she'd like a rifle with turquoise and black web stock. A Tikka T3X Compact .243 will be a nice little surprise waiting in her room, when she returns from vacation with my wife and other kids.

How it started:



Stock only, taped and ready for paint:



Three coats of turquoise spray paint, black marbling paint, and three coats of clear coat:


It's been about a week long process so far after ensuring the paint had time to dry/cure. This .243 with a suppressor should be a riot to shoot!

Assuming you used a primer, which one did you use?

Cool. I just painted a stock, but stuck with solid color. Kinda wish I applied the marbling coat as well.

I did not use a stand alone primer, I used Krylon Fusion paint+primer. I've had pretty good results from the stocks I've painted in the past with it.

Backfire makes a nice recoil pad for the compact stock that she would appreciate as well

I’ve been on the fence about a can for a few years now. A couple weeks ago I finally went through the process and was approved in less than a week. After shooting my 6.5 PRC with the can, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to get one.

Had this one done a few years ago. Not for everyone tho. Was an old H-S Precision stock from the late 80s. I had a couple laminate stocks finished with clear coat. The gent took them to a body shop when they were clear coating a vehicle because the stuff is spendy.

Both of these were clear coated. Yours looks nice. ETA I never saw a reason to clearcoat a synthetic stock.

I hate the registry. The tax. The bullshit. The cost. BUT - its all supremely worth it.

I dont see the cost going down on them for the forseeable future. You can buy a lot of things cheap in other countries....

How did you get that spider web marks on it??

Marbelizing spray. Krylon and Rustoleum both have versions of it. Can sometimes find it in the craft side of the hardware store spray paint aisle. The cap doesn’t look like the end product so you gotta read labels.

Just to echo what @Jbotto said above, Montana Marble Spray Paint got the call for this one. In the past I’ve used Krylon, but I couldn’t find any locally and all the online places were out. It’s always best to practice on something that’ll get thrown away first, just to get the hang of the spray.

Need to grab some acrylic matte clear coat next time I’m out. This one took about 30 seconds of work. I’m sure it won’t last but was a fun little “grown up” arts and crafts project.

I like your work guys! I’ve got a pair of McMillans I need to paint. One I’ve had since ‘93 the other I found @4 years ago. Both for AV Sakos, older stock has been on my 7mm. New one going on a .338 WM. Taking lots of notes.
