When sheep tags go from 300 plus to 100 in 20 years there is no fixing the demand issue. Ban domestics from the state and restore western Montana to its natural beauty. Neither is going to happen. No Points For You.

I drew goat and moose years ago. Three LE elk tags, but they were easy.
And finally the sheep tag.
Point being, I just put in, get the BP, and move on. I dont lose sleep over it.
But yeah, easy for me to say.

Correct IF you pull the trigger. You also cannot put in for Elk, deer, or antelope if you want to hunt moose, sheep, or goat. I think this makes more of a difference than making tags OIL.

And if you draw an antlered elk or deer tag you have to sit out a year for those species

Unfortunately I do think Idaho and New Mexico have mostly the right idea. Bonus points are a sham and a broken system. I don't think there is a real fix as of right now.

Pretty sure Newberg has talked about the bonus point system and how they all presented statistics and facts showing this would be the end result when FWP was considering doing the bonus point system but the old guys running the show at the time couldn’t stand the thought for whatever reason and decided to implement it regardless of facts.

Probably be grandfathered in and get to use your points. As more and more points get used it would change to a random draw.

Take a spin through the draw odds. You most likely will never draw in your life regardless of how many points you have or what district you apply for. That is the reality of the “big three”. I blame it on destruction of habitat and pumped up demand. Maybe an influencer needs to do a podcast on how most people will never draw a tag.

Nothing wrong with Montanas bonus point squared system. It’s a fine system. Theres no system that works for the really high demand tags like sheep tags or root muley tags.

In 2012 you had 12 points and today you have 26 points. Just like it says you have 26 to 1 odds advantage over a new hunter but no advantage over another max point hunter. With squared points you have 676 to 2 advantage over the new hunter but no advantage over another max point hunter.

Next year the new hunter will have 2 or 4 and you will have 729. Your odds of drawing a tag will improve negligibly (if people drop out) while the newer hunter goes backwards forever. Eventually someone will do the math for newcomers, and they will quit playing the game.

Anyone who thinks the squared point system is fine has a sense of entitlement that I can't wrap my head around.
