OR ballot to end hunting, fishing, ranching, dairy farming. . .

1952-1960 Here in America. Under "Ike" as President the wage of the average worker increased 45%. Education was so affordable to all. He was my first and still favorite President. Now he is rated the 5th greatest after Washington, Lincoln and the two Roosevelts.

"Of the people by the people for the people." This period continued on for some time but petered out. And became "of the corporation by the corporation for the corporation"

Ike warned us about this in his farewell address.

I am an old man, who grew up under Eisenhower. I have been to Omaha Beach, My uncle did not make it.

Ike felt such an incredible responsibility and dept to the men he sent into harm's way. His positions were solid and simple. Corporations owe America, not America owes corporations. He protected vast areas of wilderness. and with his 1960 Multiple Use- Sustained Yield Act, he officially mandated that the wealth of our National Forests belonged to all Americans not just the extraction industries.
Eisenhower understood well the intricate balance between shared prosperity and the capitalist system, with both underpinning the survival of the republic.

Hunting means a lot to me, that said I only hunt when my doing so matches " sound biology". Hunters always wishing to kill the biggest and best game animals, does not. What this quest does is it keeps robbing the herds genetic treasure chest and makes it weaker.
I agree with you and this is why I think that a goal for future game management should be to try to get as close to a random harvest as possible.
Playing devil's advocate. Why do larger antlers matter to herd health, there are plenty of health animals that do not have trophy antlers to do the breeding? I have my own thoughts, but would like to hear yours.

I like what you say and agree. I asked that question based on what I hear in the media and have heard some people say directly. They seem to want the government to take more from “rich people” (whatever that means) and give it to them. They’re upset with their lives and seem to think that if they had what someone else has, their lives would be better.

My cousin Danny is 84, six years older than me. He was a banker and hated Ike. Ike's financial team forbid high yield but risky investment by bankers. It was not "their money" Right now 1% of Americans own 37.7 % of all American wealth. A record high. I explored the Siuslaw National Forest about 6 months ago. Loved the Pacific Ocean. Drove inland to go the USNF District Ranger Headquarters. It was empty, chain across the parking lot with a "For Sale" sign on it.

There is a dedicated Marine Sanctuary on the coast. All protection has just been taken away. It will be fished out of existence

Here is a quote from Ike

“As we peer into society's future, we — you and I, and our government — must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Farewell address (1961)

It rained hard all day, cold rain, cold day 48 degrees, needed a fire in the wood stove. Today was a vacation day, with the rain there was no need for me to move my water irrigation lines around.
I spent most of the day studying wildlife issues.

There were once 500,000 Tule elk in California, then it went down to 2 or 3 last ones. Now there are maybe 6,000 but their genetic biodiversity piggy bank is only got a few penny's in it.

Was reading about the Sonoran "Grey Ghost" Pronghorn Antelope. In the early 2000's their population got down to 21 animals. No other pronghorn could live there, not even other Arizona Antelope. These Grey Ghost's , just like Desert Bighorn sheep have super water saving nephrons in their kidneys.

They were live trapped and given a breeding program saved just in the nick of time . There are about 450 in the US now and that many in northern Mexico.

The border wall could really hurt/block them since they chase summer monsoon thunderstorms for water.

Also was reading about Siamese Crocodiles. When all crocs were tested for super high anti-biotic properties which might be used for new human antibiotics, they scored the highest, but only with the dominant mature ones, these had won the genetic lottery but so few were are left.

I am getting mixed info about our topic, "Are hunters, by mostly taking the biggest game animals, diminishing the genetic treasure chest of the herds.?"

Sources from hunting interests say no, biologists are quite mixed.

I will see what else i can find.

My thought is that while there are a lot of factors that go into big antlers, in general the better the health the better the chance of bigger antlers. While better habitat and better food is a big part of this, I suppect that it is not the only factor. Could be the buck has a better metabolism, allowing them to put more energy into antlers, or a better immune system. Maybe their mother gave more milk, giving them a better start in life.
The other argument I here frequently is the buck has the same genes at age 1 1/2 as they do at 5 or 6 so it doesn't matter to the herd. I don't buy that one ether.
Kind of getting off the topic of the thread so PM me if you want.
