After arriving on Friday to set up camp, I woke up at 5:00AM on Saturday morning for the first day of the rifle season in Unit 30 of New Mexico...only to discover that the rear tire on my F150 4X4 had gone flat. So I could not drive six miles to then hike to the water hole I found while scouting two weeks earlier. Instead, I left from camp on foot and hiked four miles straight up the mountain just south of camp. Good thing that tire was flat. I shot this buck an hour after sunrise as he busted out of a canyon with two smaller bucks and eight does. Took him with my Remington .30-06 using 150 gr. CoreLokt ammo. Dropped him where he stood with one shot. Sometimes a bad start has a great finish. Best of all, this was a DIY hunt on public land.
