Has anyone hunted this unit? I put in for it this year. GoHunt indicates it's 63% private land. I chose it because it's just across the border from one of my favorite deer units in California (X8). Can anyone provide some insight into the opportunities there? Any points of contact in that area that can be helpful.

I hunted it several years ago (killed my best buck to date) and live in the area. The majority of the private land exists along the foothills which makes access a bit difficult but there are areas where you can get in if you are willing to hike. Where you would be hunting depends on the tag you applied for, the deer pull down off the mountain as fall progresses in the majority of the unit. Quality seems to be a little down the last few years but there are still some great genetics in there and always the chance for a pig, I'm sure there are deer in that unit that are never seen. If you are lucky enough to draw let me know and I can point you in the right direction!

Put in for that one myself let me know if you draw be more than happy to help pack out

I definitely will. I love the terrain and country around there. And I know the California side of that unit very well. I know there's deer in there! I've killed several nice ones in zone X-8. I put in for an archery tag for X-8 this year. I'll keep you posted and with any luck, we'll both draw NV 192.

I drew the early archery tag for 192 on mistake and I've never stepped foot on that side of 50. This is my first archery hunt and any advice would be much appreciated. I've hunted 194-196, 195 and 021 if you need any advice on those units. Thanks guys!

I would always recommend hunting the Garson road area across from Boomtown Casino, but they've broke ground for a new housing development and I'm not sure how this affects access anymore. This area is a wintering ground for hundreds of NV/CA deer every year, but I'm not sure how the construction is going to affect the herd this year. If we get a good amount of snow, it should be great down low, otherwise you'll need to get up high in the trees where it'll get tougher to hunt. The Kings canyon area above Carson City is also a great area. There's lots of trails and the deer in 194 are really used to seeing people, so they tend to let you get closer without getting spooked so easily. 196 is a lot more open country, which I think would make for a tougher hunt.

Hey I know this is old but my buddy drew 194-196. I hunted that as a kid 20 years ago and you cannot hunt where we used to hunt anymore lol. Browns creek area used to be a hot spot but it’s all private now. I know just south of that is winters creek not sure if that’s still doable with all the people. My buddy is way older than me so it kinda sucks. I don’t even put in for these units anymore cuz of all the people and I never allow myself to get that many points anyway. Thank you in advance

Congrats on the tag! I haven't been up there this year, but I'd try Kings Canyon and Garson Rd, across from Cabelas. There's construction back in there now, so you'll want to check out the Garson area before hand, to figure out your entry points. Peavine also holds a lot of deer and sometimes you can find some brutes on the north end in the timber.
