My wife and I will be in North Dakota at the end of the month over Memorial Day for a few days. We'll fly into Fargo and will be staying in Grand Forks. Anything that we should plan on checking out within a 2-3 hour drive? Any good restaurants, breweries, etc. in the area worth stopping in?

Grand Forks isn't a terrible food town. It's got a good mix of "nice" restaurants ("The Toasted Frog" and "Harry's" are solid) but the collection of places that serve "working mans food" is where the town thrives. Darcy's Cafe for breakfast, the Broken Drum is a solid lunch spot, Red Pepper is a neighborhood staple, and parrot's cay has very good wings. JL Beers has a great beer selection and serves a really good burger (always with the fresh cooked chips as a side).

Local tourism... not where the area thrives. But, if you are in town on Thursday the 21st, you could check out the races at the Red River Valley Speedway. Sprints, mods, etc. It is pretty good racing.

That week is a little on the early side for the best cat fishing in the red river but there are some really good guides (Brad Durick) in the area that can take you out after channel cats. The area is known for trophy channel cats.

It is flat... really flat. You are going to find a lot of farm land in essentially every direction for 2 hours from Grand Forks. Canada is only an hour from Grand Forks, but it is pretty much like North Dakota with worse roads.

Ive been wanting to ride mtb in Theodore Roosevelt grasslands. Just never seem to get there.
Umm, Teddy was a little more than two hours from the Minnesota side of state. Although the presidential library grand opening is July 4th I think.

Grand Forks....One of my absolute least favorite places.

If you're into sports or hockey at all, the Ralph Engelstad Arena is pretty neat. Not sure how much it's open though to go look around.

They have excellent fishing for catfish right on the river in Grand Forks. You can shorefish it easy enough. Might be something to consider. Those are the highlights of Grand Forks IMO.

Drekkers big complex in fargo is worth visiting...especially if you like like really good fruit ales. Junkyard Brewing in Fargo and Moorhead is good too. The Blue Moose across the River in East Grand Forks was good for years but been a few since we've been up there.

There might be some confusion here...the Sheyenne National grasslands are not far from Fargo on the east side of the state.

Within a few hours of Grand Forks Devils Lake has some good fishing. Long been a huge perch fishery but they are down a bit.

The Pembina Hill country NW of town closer to Canada is neat. Rydel and Glacial Ridge Nat. Wildlife refuges are east into MN a bit.

There are chicken and sharptail dancing ground blinds in the area but you are a bit late in timing for them.

MN elk arent too far NE of Grand Forks but seeing them is a crapshoot.

If you do go a little farther west, you can get your picture with Salem Sue!

My buddy got off the freeway to look at in December around 11pm. He had just seen it a week before. When he stopped the car and told me I should get out and walk up to it. I told him to get back on the freeway.

I lived in Crookston for two years. I don’t think I ever really wanna go back to that part of the world.

Some great lightly hunted bird hunting in the area....
